Once the most sought after career, manufacturing has lost its sheen over the past few decades, as it fails to attract the right talent. Most of the times young aspiring workers shy away from opting for this industry, is due to the way it is perceived by youngsters. The young people who are work ready do not wish to toil endlessly and be ordered around by their supervisors. All this has led to an acute shortage of frontline workers which is nearly 30% down from the actual requirement in this industry.
One of the ways to bridge this gap is to make manufacturing, an alluring proposition for the untapped pool of work force who do not wish to continue long into their studies. In several of the manufacturing roles there is little requirement of a four years engineering degree, instead the it’s better to catch them young with two years degree and subsequently they can gain further knowledge of their field from the more experienced people in their organization, while upgrading themselves in technology through training.
Technology can act as an enabler by resolving the mismatch between the skill-set and know-how of the entry level worker and the one demanded by the industry.
Methods of increasing the salaries also need to be found if in future the top guns in manufacturing aim to lure the right talent to this field.
