Redefining Present Indian Education System: - Some Action Steps

The present Indian education system requires holistic restructuring in the wake of New Education Policy -2020. The present education system is based on rote and memorization based learning with sole purpose of passing the Examination and getting the degrees and certificates. The graduates passing out today lack skills and competency to contribute effectively in the growth of the society and nation at large. The new education policy clearly emphasises on outcome based learning (OBE) which requires setting clear objectives of a particular course and the corresponding outcomes to be achieved to match with objectives laid down. The curricula should be designed in a sequential manner so that the gap between delivery and the outcomes achieved should be bridged to optimise the teaching- learning process. The teaching – learning process is at the root of the restructuring process. The first and the foremost requirement for initiating the teaching –learning process is to work on the mindset of both teacher and the taught. Mindset training should be made a core part of curricula to develop that kind of attitude for both teacher and students which is conducive for purposeful teaching and learning to achieve the desired outcomes. The efforts should be made to break the fixed mindset of both teacher and taught which is more rigid on the part of both and to inculcate the growth mindset for better and effective teaching and learning. The teaching – learning process can be optimised best through breaking down the lecture delivery time in smaller time chunks and micro – learning lessons should be incorporated in these small time chunks to facilitate better conceptual learning for students. The teaching and learning process should follow sequential path without closing the loop at the end of lecture delivery instead loop should be left open to begin from that point in the next lecture and so on and finally loop should be closed at the culmination of the topic taught for better clarity and understanding of concepts. Student then should be given some application based action steps on how to implement the learning by following them precisely. These action steps may be based on some experiential learning and through micro level practical tasks to be accomplished by students under the supervision of the teacher. These small action based tasks will help students to break free from rote and memorization based approach to learning and to gain more practical insights which will serve them well and they will be able to contribute more in an effective and fruitful manner. So, to summarize in the end, the entire process explained above is based on Mindset- Concept Action (MCA) trilogy, also called Golden Triangle of teaching and learning process and may help improving the current educational system at the root level to some extent.
