Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: Study of Women Athletes’ Performance

Olympic is an international sport event, organized every four years. It was started in Greece in Eighth Century BC and continued till 4th century AD (en.wikipedia). After a long period of time in 1896, the first modern Olympic Games were organised in Athens. The international organising committee was founded by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1894.

More than 200 counties and thousands of participants participate in this prestigious event and represent their countries.  This event was also postponed due to political disturbance in around the world during World War I and II, recently it was postponed in 2020 due to Covid-19 pandemic.  The Olympic 2020, was organised in Japan 2021. The event started on 23rd July 2021 and ended on 10th of August 2021.

This Article is focussed on women’s performance in Olympic 2020.  Participation of women in different fields has  increased day by day. The main reasons behind this are:

2.Career orientation

3.Family Support.

4.Opportunities.

The data for this article has collected from official website of Olympic committee. Total number of countries participated was 205 and approximately more than 11000 participants. In the below chart, it is shows the increased percentage of women candidate since its inception till 2020.

In figure 2, total 93 counties won the medals and they have been ranked according to the number medals won. USA ranked 1 with 133 medals, followed by China with 88 medals, Japan 3rd position with 58 medals. India wins 7 medals and ranks 33.

Table 2 shows number of women medalist and percentage of women winners from total medals winner. To analyze the performance of women athletes, total number of women winner athletes are divided by total number of medals won of respective country. In this article, only those candidates have been included whose percentage is more than 50%. Countries like Namibia, Turkmenistan, Belarus results 100% means only women candidates won the medals. Similarly, Women Athletes representatives of countries like United StatesGreat Britain, China, Japan, Sweden, France, Italy, Republic of Korea , Spain , Hungary etc won 50%  or more medals for their countries. The overall study reflects that a 52% of women athletes won the medals out of total medals.
