Heal Environment and Heal Yourself: Happy World Environment Day

Last year in 2025 when I woke up in the morning, I found my newspaper, green in color. First I was surprised that why it was green that day, but suddenly I realized that it was 5th June and the whole planet was celebrating World Environment Day with great zeal and fervor.  This gave me immense happiness that offices, government, organizations, persons, institutes, schools, companies and local bodies are taking steps towards the environment and raising awareness around them to save this Earth. Now this year again we will take many initiatives and resolution on 5th June 2026 to save our Earth from environmental crisis.  As we all know that due to the need of the hour, World Environment Day was established in 1972 at the time of United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm. Later this particular June 5 was designated as World Environment Day, which marked the beginning of global awareness on environmental issues. The theme for World Environment Day 2026, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future”, highlights the powerful role that nature plays in addressing climate challenges and securing a sustainable future for all.

Nature has always been humanity’s greatest teacher. Forests regulate the climate, wetlands absorb floodwaters, oceans capture carbon dioxide, and biodiversity maintains the delicate balance of ecosystems. Yet, human activities such as deforestation, pollution, overconsumption, and the excessive use of fossil fuels have disrupted these natural systems, contributing to climate change and environmental degradation.

This year’s theme reminds us that the solutions to many of today’s environmental problems already exist in nature. Known as nature-based solutions, these approaches involve protecting, restoring, and sustainably managing ecosystems to combat climate change while benefiting people and wildlife. Planting trees, conserving forests, restoring degraded lands, protecting mangroves, and preserving biodiversity are some examples of actions inspired by nature that can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen resilience against climate-related disasters.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Rising temperatures, unpredictable weather patterns, melting glaciers, and increasing natural disasters affect communities across the globe. Vulnerable populations often bear the greatest burden of these impacts. Therefore, addressing climate change is not only an environmental necessity but also a matter of social and economic justice. Educational institutions, local communities, businesses, and governments all have important roles to play. Schools and colleges can organize environmental awareness campaigns, tree-planting drives, and sustainability projects. Governments can invest in renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, and conservation initiatives. Individuals can contribute by reducing waste, conserving energy, using public transport, and supporting eco-friendly practices.

As environmentalist David Attenborough wisely observed, “The natural world is the greatest source of excitement, the greatest source of visual beauty, the greatest source of intellectual interest.” The theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” encourages us to recognize that our future is inseparable from the health of the environment.

Not only World Environment Day but every day should be a reminder for humanity that every small action is extremely important and leads to the path of sustainability. Whether you’re saying no to a plastic bag, planting trees, saving water or adopting the environment friendly practices. So let’s take a pledge to build a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable world for generations to come. On this note, I recall a passage from the Srimad Bhagavatam (2.2.41), that echoes:

“Ether, air, fire, water, earth, planets, all creatures, directions, trees and plants, rivers and seas, they are all organs of God’s body. Remembering this a devotee respects all species.”
