Amidst pandemic the most challenges occurred was in imparting education at every level. Our institutes faced the challenges and handled them very confidently without letting the situation hinder the education. Today we are technologically equipped to take actions in regard of the situation and overcome the hurdles, but the only question arises in my mind is that is our curriculum updated enough to teach our students the knowledge which will relevant to the upcoming situations and demand of the society?
Engineering education seems to be stuck in year 1955. The syllabus is obsolete and is irrelevant to the current upgraded technological and industrial scenarios. The curriculum needs to be updated keeping in mind about its application-based approach in the jobs. As we have grown so much on digital platform, the curriculum needs to be moulded according to the needs of the rapidly changing society and diversity.
The engineering education should be more focused towards giving industrial oriented experience to the students, which will make them more aware about field experiences. We need to adapt certain new ideas in the curricula and discard the ones which are not serving the purpose anymore.
According to the article written by Sheryl Sorby, she stated that we need to put an end to the pipeline mindset where there is only one entry and one exist. The diversity of the students is ignored and every student has to get into rote memorization in order to pass their and semester and pave their way to get the degree of engineering. This mindset have actually forced them to believe that engineering education is all about surviving through the semesters and attaining degree,
The curriculum is rigid and students are forced to study subjects or topics which are not necessary for them, for example, students are taught JAVA programing language which is very outdated and is not used in current situations. The curriculum not only demotivates the students but also makes it hard for them to strive through it.
The students who are creative and are more attracted toward colors find it difficult to adapt the curriculum and eventually give up believing that they are not smart enough to become an engineer. The curriculum is more about passing through the college than making students a good engineer. Due to this kind of syllabus, it is quite impossible to calculate that a good amount of talent gets wasted.
Evidently it is very important to bring revolution in the engineering education so that it can be more accessible to the students and is relevant to the modern sciences. The importance of teamwork should be promoted by the professors and dissertations should be assigned to the group students. The curriculum should also reflect its application at jobs and internships. It should provide students with more industrial experiences and also promote the diversity of students. Give them opportunities to explore their creativity and know about their problem-solving attitude. The more we provide them with opportunities to experiment and understand the concept without memorizing them, will result in creation of more good engineers. And with the upgradation in the content and subject matter will bring in ease for the students to take appropriate actions at their job without wasting time in learning something new. Adapting new methods in selection of the students will promote inclusion of students with analytical and creative mind which gets wasted due to the rigid and specific assessment methods.
