I think you all agree with me that teachers are the unsung torch bearers who make their best efforts to design a nation. It is believed that a teacher who has passion, dedication, and willingness to transform the world can help the learners to acquire their goals. But it is also true that the best traits of a teacher can’t help them to do justice to their profession in absence of effective teaching strategies such as teaching pedagogy, various teaching styles, management tactics, etc.
For a long time, in our country, teaching pedagogy has been teacher-centric, in which the teacher has an active role, and the student has a passive role, and this creates a difference. The learning system that we follow focuses on memorizing the facts or information provided by the teachers. Therefore, teachers’ knowledge and skills and the students’ retaining capacity play a pivotal role in learning. Given the features of current textbook-centric pedagogy, it’s quite surprising that teachers don’t have much space to showcase their creativity and innovation. They are just instruments, as they have to follow the instructions provided to them by their boards or management (especially in private schools) and they have little or no autonomy to make the desired modifications related to the pedagogy. In addition to that, they are in a hurry to complete the course and this affects the learning process badly. So, there are certain reasons why this education system is not useful for all types of learners.
Though, there are certain policies such as NCF (National Curriculum Framework) and NEP 2020 (National Education Policy 2020) that have been working on the relevant and learner-centric education system in our country. The sole aim of these policies is to achieve a positive outcome for teaching and learning. Generally, in a class of 35-45, there’s a variety of students. Those who are not blessed with excellent grasping capability are not able to cope with the rapidly changing world.
In a learner-centric pedagogy, the prime focus is on the comprehension of the subjects, so that the learners can understand the concept and implement it practically. Including activities, hands-on, and projects will make the process of learning more interactive and interesting. This would boost their morale and confidence. This would also help them to apply their knowledge and skills in their day-to-day life.
As mentioned earlier, every student is different, so a teacher must understand the needs of all of the learners and make strategies accordingly. Though, it’s easier said than done. To do so, teachers must understand the level of their students as making the learners sit in the first row or penalizing them won’t solve the purpose. Giving different assignments according to the levels of learners and encouraging the learners to take the initiative can undoubtedly help them to do better.
Moreover, the process of learning with and from peers will make them more confident and better communicators. The group activities and student-led workshops will let them take control of their learning. Creating a positive and conducive learning environment is of utmost significance for improvement. Persistent and consistent efforts and timely feedback also help them to learn fast.
Someone has aptly said that as teachers, we have the great privilege and responsibility to impact our students’ lives positively and encourage them to succeed in their lives.
